Microstructure of Laser Welded Joints in Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 Treated by Plasma Remelting

Microstructure of Laser Welded Joints in Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 Treated by Plasma Remelting

Abstract

The work aims to address the issue of low austenite phase content in laser welded joints of 2205 duplex stainless steel. The gas focusing plasma arc welding technique was used to remelt the laser welded joints of 2205 duplex stainless steel. Then, the characterization of the microstructure and performance test of the joint top surface were conducted through XRD, SEM, EBSD, EPMA, and microhardness testing. Compared to laser welding, the austenite content in the top surface of the remelted joint by gas focusing plasma arc welding increased by 442%, and the microhardness of the joint top surface improved by 9%. At the austenite grain boundaries and within the austenite grains, there was noticeable deformation, with a large number of grain boundaries exhibiting misorientation less than 2° and a high geometric dislocation density. The N element content in the austenite phase reached 0.893%. Compared to the ferrite phase, the Cr element content in the austenite phase increased by 0.179%, while the Ni element content decreased by 0.219%, and the Mo element content decreased by 1.07%. Gas focusing plasma arc welding remelting significantly increases the austenite phase content on the surface of laser welded joints of 2205 duplex stainless steel and enhances the microhardness of the joint surface. Although the Mo element content in the austenite phase is reduced, the increased N element content results in the austenite phase of the remelted joint by gas focusing plasma arc welding exhibiting superior pitting corrosion resistance compared to the ferrite phase.
