Methods and mechanisms of improvement of metal formability appeared in the field of plastic processing recent years were introduced in this paper, including the mechanisms inducing formability improvement of sheets through the methods such as bending-under-tension, local contact, repeated bending, cyclical alternating loading and high hydrostatic pressure in incremental sheet forming; the mechanisms of formability improvement of tubes in pulsating hydroforming with axial feeding; mechanisms of formability improvement of AISI 304 stainless steel tubes in pulsating hydroforming with and without axial feeding; and mechanisms of formability improvement of AISI 304 stainless steel tubes under repeated loading and unloading. These mechanisms also exist in other plastic processing technologies. The quality of products and material utilization will be effectively improved and the processing passes can be reduced with the suitable use of these mechanisms; and some new plastic processing technologies will even appear.
